B.C.'s pulp and paper industry have been leaders in environmental sustainability. The environmental achievements include:
- Since 1990, pulp and paper facilities in the province have reduced their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 62%, while increasing production volumes.
- The reduction in greenhouse gases by the pulp and paper industry is equivalent to removing 600,000 vehicles from our roads.
- The pulp and paper industry is one of the global leaders in the use of combined heat and power (CHP) systems. These cogeneration systems produce electrical power and thermal energy from the same fuel-yielding twice as much energy from the same amount of fuel.
- The pulp and paper industry is a leader in energy self-sufficiency as it generates over 70% of its energy requirements from within the pulping process.
- The industry produces 850 Megawatts of renewable Biomass electricity, making B.C. the largest biomass-generating region in North America.
